Apologies to all my Fb friends who had to put up with this rant yesterday. Here it is again but with a couple more observations.
Inspired by a letter from The President and members of Ravensworth WI in the Darlington & Stockton Times, that a new logo costing over £88,000 has just been commissioned, I came up with this quick sketch, that with a little more work could be used as a logo or a badge for the Women’s Institute,
I could not see much wrong with the old WI logo which represents the Tree of Life. After all it is traditional, easily recognisable and was probably designed and made by a member of WI. I am sure if WI branches had been polled, any number of designs would have been forthcoming.
If I could knock this up in half an hour, what could I have done with a budget of 88 Grand. Makes you think, Doesn’t it.
I envisage this as a badge in gilt and enamels. Obviously the WI will not wish to use it, so with a little more work we could turn it into W for Wendy, or turn it upside down and use it as M for Mary, or, bearing in mind that tomorrow is Mothering Sunday, M for Mother.
Keep watching this space.
Excellent design Bill. They are crazy not to strongly consider this.

Ah! Thanks Janee.
I am pleased you like my little effort. However it was done retrospectively (after seeing the new design), as my protest at the increasingly sloppy, not to mention expensive, design that is creeping into all areas of life today. For a “high class” professional firm to foist this seemingly beginners effort at a typographical exercise onto the WI, a group committed to ARTS and CRAFTS in it’s many forms, is nothing short of criminal. For such a group, between their old “Tree of Life” design and this new sans serif monstrosity there should have been no contest.
Grrr. Rant over.
Cheers. Bill
